British spiritualists named it; Artists, Surfers and Free Spirits define It!
History: The secluded beach community was founded in 1870 and developed by a group of British spiritualists in search of religious freedom. It grew into a haven for artists, surfers and free spirits, along with the independent galleries, surf shops and natural food stores that popped up to serve them. It was incorporated into Encinitas in 1986, but like such local luminaries as guitarist Peter Sprague and pro surfer Brad Gerlach, Leucadia follows its own singular beat. Just ask the independent-minded folks who launched the “Keep Leucadia Funky” campaign.
How it got its name: The British spiritualists who named Leucadia’s streets after Greek and Roman gods were similarly inspired when they named the town. Loosely translated from the Greek, it means “sheltered place.”
Did you know? Eucalyptus trees were planted along Highway 101 in the late 1800s, and when President Franklin Roosevelt passed through town in an open car during the Depression, local children climbed the trees to get a better look and wave as he drove by. Decades later, the town was also part of the successful campaign to have Highway 101 declared historic.
Things to do: It’s all about the good beach life here. Stock up on organic produce and locally made crafts at the famed Farmers Market (Sundays at Paul Ecke Central Elementary School), settle in for some fishing at Beacon’s Beach and indulge in a fresh cake donut at the beloved Leucadia Donut Shoppe. Summer brings the LeucadiART Walk, with live music, art demonstrations and beer garden.
