Carlsbad: Celebrated Mineral Springs gives rise to Flowers, Shopping & Legos
History: Carlsbad was originally settled by the Luiseno Indians, but the city’s roots were planted in the 13,331 acres granted to Don Juan Marron in 1842. In 1883, a retired sea captain discovered a spring of artesian mineral water, and Carlsbad became a hub for health-seekers and horticulturists alike. The city was incorporated in 1952. Tourists and locals flock to the city’s famed flower fields, and health-conscious visitors tap into wellness at the Chopra Center, founded in 1996 by Deepak Chopra. The sprawling, all-enclosed Plaza Camino Real Shopping Center opened in 1969, giving the county its sixth big mall. Carlsbad became home to Legoland California in 1999, giving the West Coast the Lego Empire State Building we always wanted.
How it got its name: The original name was Frazier’s Station, after settler John A. Frazier. He discovered a mineral spring nearly identical in taste to the water found at a famous spa in Karlsbad, Bohemia, and the name was changed to mark the distinction.
Did you know? The Norte Mexican Food & Cocktails restaurant in the Carlsbad Village was once the site of the Royal Palms, a happening resort and eatery that was frequented by such Hollywood types as John Wayne, Errol Flynn and Keenan Wynn.
